MEMA’s Julie Fream Delivered Keynote Address at Michigan Tech’s 2023 Spring Commencement
(Southfield, Mich, May 5, 2023) – Julie Fream, president and CEO of MEMA Original Equipment Suppliers, delivered the keynote address at Michigan Tech’s undergraduate and graduate 2023 Spring commencement. Fream, an alumna of Michigan Tech’s class of 1983, shared her career journey and the importance of collaboration and adaptation to change.
During her keynote, she highlighted the critical role that emotional intelligence has played in her career, encouraging graduates to focus on developing their EQ along with their IQ.
Fream advised graduates to embrace ambiguity as it opens the door to critical and creative thinking. She also shared three suggestions for life after graduation: learn to live in the gray, write down your goals, and give back.
“Each of us has the desire to be seen and heard. At every opportunity, strive to give the person in front of you your complete attention,” Fream said when explaining that giving back does not have to be complex. “Let them know they matter and are appreciated. People remember how you made them feel. That is a lasting impact.”
‘Fream’s speech was especially meaningful as it was the 40th anniversary of her graduation from Michigan Tech with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering. Her inspiring words left a lasting impression on the graduates as they embark on their journey after graduation.
Fream was awarded an honorary doctorate degree in recognition for her long-standing commitment to Michigan Tech.
