MEMA Provide Comments to CARB on Heavy Duty NOx Omnibus

The Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) provided comments to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on its proposed Heavy Duty (HD) Engine and Vehicle Omnibus regulation, which sets California’s NOx standards for HD vehicles starting in MY2024. MEMA stated in its comments that it strongly supports the CARB’s goals of the Omnibus rulemaking outlined in the proposal. HD vehicle suppliers, which MEMA represents through its HDMA division, support a holistic HD NOx emissions reduction strategy that is aligned with market forces and drives adoption of these HD emissions technologies. The framework outlined in CARB’s Omnibus will foster both technology innovation and development opportunities. MEMA’s comments encourage stringent new standards, a 90 percent reduction of NOx emissions from current HD engines, that support implementation of the best available cost-effective, emissions reduction technologies. Maintaining stringency in the HD NOx standards is necessary to continue strengthening supplier manufacturing sector jobs − the largest sector of manufacturing jobs in the U.S. − and driving a global technology leadership position for U.S. manufacturers. MEMA also continues to encourage CARB and U.S. EPA to coordinate on their HD low NOx programs and to work to harmonize the programs as closely as possible.
