MEMA Applauds Removal of Steel and Aluminum Tariffs
MEMA applauds the joint U.S., Canada and Mexico announcement today that Section 232 steel and aluminum tariffs on Canada and Mexico will be removed in 48 hours. “MEMA has long urged the administration to lift these tariffs. Today’s action is the right thing to do and we urge the Congress to quickly pass the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA),” said MEMA CEO & President Bill Long.
MEMA looks forward to working with all the parties to fully understand the outlined monitoring and surge protection processes. There is no question that this good news today reinforces the need for Congress to start consideration of the USMCA.
MEMA represents the largest sector of manufacturing jobs in the United States. Motor vehicle suppliers directly employ over 871,000 U.S. workers, with a total employment-induced impact of 4.26 million jobs. Suppliers generate 2.4 percent of the U.S. GDP.
