MEMA Update on Section 301 Tariffs

MEMA will continue to monitor developments closely and update our members with the latest information. Please contact Bill Frymoyer for more information.

Jump to Section

On May 14, 2024, the Biden Administration has announced findings from the four-year review of Section 301 tariffs on goods imported from the People’s Republic of China. As part of this update, certain tariffs have been increased while most existing tariffs will remain unchanged. MEMA has been actively involved in discussions with the administration, reflecting our members' perspectives and continuing our commitment to providing informed feedback on these critical trade issues.

    Highlights from the Administration's Announcement:

    • Partial List of Increased Tariffs: The administration released a partial list of goods subject to increased tariffs, which includes batteries, battery parts, electric vehicles (EVs), semiconductors, and other products.
    • Public Commentary and Exclusion Process: Ambassador Katherine Tai confirmed the opportunity for public commentary on the new tariffs. A Federal Register notice will be issued next week outlining the procedures for commenting on the proposed modifications and detailing the exclusion process for machinery used in domestic manufacturing.
    • Enhanced Enforcement by Customs: The report also recommends allocating additional funds to United States Customs and Border Protection to strengthen the enforcement of Section 301 actions, ensuring compliance and protection against unfair trade practices.
